JenW: but alas, you won't be abe to see him very well
durff: hi sue
cjharris: I am in WA watching- i learned some great simple ways to enhance what I am already doing in the classroom
JenW: Jeff -- are you watching the skype chat at all -- or should I just ignore it??
cjharris: i like the idea of "the importance of taking time to play" and for me the key is taking it one piece at a time
Sujokat: Hi all Sunday morning here
jutecht: @cjharris.....great.....
cjharris: it can be overwhelming if you look at everything at once
durff: playing video game to reinforce math is a new thing with new stuff
jutecht: @cjharris...that's what I'm hoping my message is.....start with one thing and do it well.
kyteacher: I think we often forget that students need time to play. So much pressure to cover content that we don't give them the chance to explore and learn.
the knights: Absolutely agree chris
durff: kids love to play - i do too
jayne: i need time to play - it's re-prioritizing
jutecht: @durff...yes.....the technology allows for whole new experiences that didn't exist before it....great example.
the knights: you need time to figure out the programs before you can bring them to your clas
JenW: @THE KNIGHTS I gave my students a software this week and said -- you get to teach it to me........ and they did :)
the knights: I'm going to try to implement podcasts more in my class, that session was great :0
durff: blogging is an old thing with new stuff --> composition with blogs
kyteacher: I often feel guilty when I set aside content for a day in order to allow students to explore a new technology.
courosa: stream not working for me, booo.
GDhuyvetter: Amazing that Jeff can sit and watch the room for minutes...contact is not only possible, it is essentially free
JenW: livestream.com/tell09
Sujokat: Can't hear stream on iPhone will have to fire up computer cya
JenW: et me check it
jutecht: @the knights.....podcasts can very powerful...where do you think they fit in in these stages of use?
durff: it sounds good here in PA
kyteacher: I still do it, just worry about what will happen if admin walks in and wants to know how we're tied to core content for the day.
mel from x.x.x.177 joined the chat 33 minutes ago
durff: hi mel
the knights: old things in a new way
mel: Hi
GDhuyvetter: @jutecht I think podcasts are the new model of inservice
durff: so example of new things with old stuff?
jutecht: @kyteacher.....I agree....play time in the classroom needs to happen.....I call it "explore time" kids like that. :)
durff: anyone?
the knights: such as making a study guide or flash cards accessible on an ipod
JenW: Jeff -- just interrupt us when you are ready to drag them back
cjharris: i dont worry about taking time for the students to explore a new technology- once they learn it they can use it the rest of the year and beyond- and their future learning will be much enhanced- its worth it
the knights: Chris we have a great cd we can share with you that shows how to use podcast for all that kind of stuff
JenW: yes
durff: they will explore - can't keep them from it
cjharris: that would be great
durff: I intro'
kyteacher: @cjharris I only worry when I know that there are Board members walking the building.
durff: and at home one girl used it for 8 hrs straight
JenW: we just turned the air back off -- so sound should get better
cjharris: have an example of what could come out of your teaching- while the students are learning "photostory" for example, show the board members a completed photostory another class has created
annette from x.x.x.218 joined the chat 29 minutes ago
kyteacher: @durff I love when that happens. My students have been updating our Ning all weekend.
jayne: I don't see a problem with kids playing - they learn a lot that way too
durff: it is the first step in learning anything new
JenW: I am very happy you all have joined us
jayne: yes - playing within a context
GDhuyvetter: It's been my experience that admin and board members tend to be fascinated by anything involving technology
marcia: @kyteacher ... your school doesn't block Ning?
GDhuyvetter: A bigger concern is that they can't discern what is effective and not efective use
kyteacher: @marcia Not right now. They started blocking at the end of the year last year (after we had used for 6 mo) & I threatened to quit.
Rushton from x.x.x.218 joined the chat 26 minutes ago
durff: i disagree that we have to know a tool before we teach it
durff: hi rushton
GDhuyvetter: Really like and agree with the age and mindset comment!
Rushton: Howdy! Before knowing the mechanics of a tool, we certainly need to have a sense of what it brings to our students' learning.
marcia: @kyteacher ... I know :( I have been trying to get access so I can participate more effectively on Flat Classroom projects
durff: do we?
durff: why not ask the learners?
durff: isn't that part of being a self-directed, lifelong learner?
Rushton: That could be part of the process, but it happens in advance of devoting a teacher's time to learning something, no?
fghhj from x.x.x.148 joined the chat 24 minutes ago
cjharris: Also consider this for differentiated instruction time- students exploring technology while you are working with a small group on math, language, etc...
kyteacher: @marcia They could start blocking again at any time, but I decided to take the chance. Students love using it & I love the results.
durff: hi fghhj
marcia: are your students 13 years old and up?
kyteacher: @marcia Yes...high school.
Chris Bell from x.x.x.218 joined the chat 23 minutes ago
marcia: @kyteacher .. that makes it an easier sell
Scott Shelhart from x.x.x.9 joined the chat 23 minutes ago
durff: hey scott!
tparent: yes!
Scott Shelhart: Hi Durff.
JenW: That is a question on our evaluation -- WHAT IS YOUR ONE TAKE-AWAY!!! and you didn't even know that Jeff
durff: why not present a tool and ask learners if it is useful and with which age level?
marcia: @kyteacher .. great site, i've been doing Flat Classroom projects but kids have to get on Ning from home
Rushton: Amen - the key is to take time to play with the tools and imagine what you might do with them (ideally, with student input on those possibilities).
durff: oo, did we lose him?
Chris Bell: Hi durff
durff: hi
annette from x.x.x.218 joined the chat 21 minutes ago
Chris Bell: Hmmm it cut out
durff: i need to go get a plate of dinner - brb and hi annette
Rushton: Question: Do you feel that there is more reception to technology in learning ideas where you are (Asia)?
kyteacher: Many of mine don't have access at home.
marcia: @kyteacher ... that's a huge problem
mcarls from x.x.x.6 joined the chat 20 minutes ago
kyteacher: I have to build in time during the day to allow them to contribute. Fortunately, 3 computers in my classroom.
marcia: @kyteacher where are you located?
mcarls: Many teachers out here in Western New York have to build in time to allow students to complete online tasks.
kyteacher: Kentucky
cjharris: I have a couple students with limited home access- they enjoy going to the public library to contribute, and the parents have been helpful with that
mcarls: Quite a few families have no internet or maybe dialup
kyteacher: We make it work. Just have to be creative.
marcia: absolutely
Rushton: Thanks!
kyteacher: And my principal is completely supportive. That helps too.
marcia: brilliant
the knights: Our school techlab is open early in the mornings for parents or students if they do not have access to the internet or just want to learn new tools
Scott Shelhart from x.x.x.9 left the chat 16 minutes ago
Rushton: Mark Dohn's kids are using PhotoBooth to do video reflections on their work - totally cool.
cjharris: thats a great idea- but who monitors the techlab?
marcia: the tech police :)
the knights: our student council
kyteacher: Our library opens 15 min before school starts...or students can use the computers in my room.
jayne: that is our biggest problem - troubleshooting tech problems
marcia: whatever works!
marcia: kids are usually very good at troubleshooting
JenW: any quesionts here?
marcia: we use a wiki and there's a page for troubleshooting .. the kids do the work, sometimes tutorials, or even videos
jayne: true - but there aren't always relaible ones in each of the classes
mcarls from x.x.x.6 left the chat 12 minutes ago
durff: is this finished?
JenW: jeff -- please add that link to the wiki as well -- THANKS
JenW: did we lose sound??
jayne: listening to jeff right now on the podcast
kyteacher: Seems to be wrapping up...
durff: i lost the feed
jayne: yes q & a
durff: but then i was fetching my dinner
JenW: livestream.com/tell09
kyteacher: Me too...lost the feed, I mean.
JenW: question is about admin
cjharris: where is the podcast located? I'm only on the livestream and it cut out
kyteacher: I'm there, only it's not working here.
JenW: hmmm it is still running
JenW: sorry
Ken from x.x.x.98 joined the chat 9 minutes ago
jayne: as a principal I support the use of tech and more -it's troubleshooting and arranging for time - the teachers are great
jutecht: Thanks for joining me!
kyteacher: Conversation has been good here.
jayne: thanks jeff -
Ken: I am bummed I missed all my friends today
JenW: lost the stream -- sorry
durff: thanks for doing this jeff and jen!
Ken: Oh well thanks for all the tweets so I can virtually keep up
JenW: but he is winding down
JenW: our wiki is at tellconference.pbworks.com --
durff: no feed
JenW: all of Jeff's notes are there and the stream will be there tomorrow
JenW: stream dropped
durff: ok
JenW: Jeff is talking about teachers having to read blogs
durff: did you record the other keynote?
JenW: they have to read all blogs -- not all blog posts
JenW: Yes, Rushton's keynote will be on his page on the wiki
JenW: just FYI -- we had about 114 people here today
durff: ):
JenW: first time conference ---
JenW: first time virtual keynote -- I believe
cjharris: i think its so important that the administration understands how essential it is to allocate resources for troubleshooting- if the technology isnt working for the teachers or the students, and they are not able to receive support in a timely manner, it can make tech learning a disheartening experience
durff: butter bread got that
durff: :)
durff: @cjharris welcome to my world
cjharris: thanks Jeff and thanks to everyone- great event!
durff: it is that way every school day
durff: I tell kids to tell their parents (private school)
durff: gtg - see you all online!
kyteacher: Thanks everyone for the great conversation. Have a good night.
marcia: thanks, jeff
jutecht: Thanks everyone for joining me
jayne: thanks again jeff
jutecht: I'll copy this chat and put it on the wiki.
